A respected figure in local government, Tietz is now the latest former government employee to be hired by Carone, as City & State first reported. He follows former U.S. Rep. Max Rose, who is serving as Oaktree’s managing director for federal and international affairs, and Gary Jenkins, who led the Department of Social Services under Mayor Eric Adams and now leads Oaktree’s nonprofit dealings.
An attorney and registered nurse, Tietz led an agency charged with administering aid for low-income households, including the pandemic-era emergency rental assistance program, ERAP. Hochul appointed him to the role in December 2021.
Carone’s potentially lucrative career turn, which could benefit from his connections in city government and expected role in Mayor Eric Adams’ re-election campaign, has sparked ethics concerns—though he has vowed not to directly lobby city officials for one year from his departure, in keeping with city law. His firm’s stated mission is “reducing complexity to deliver strategies that work,” according to Oaktree’s website.
Oaktree’s clients include the real estate firm the Durst Organization, the New York Times has reported, while Carone himself is assisting with SL Green’s Times Square casino bid.
“Dan is not only one of the most purpose-driven and respected leaders I know, he is also one of the most effective,” Carone said in a statement.
Announcing his resignation last month, Tietz touted his role in putting millions of dollars toward supportive housing construction and distributing pandemic relief, including the ERAP rental aid program, which has now distributed nearly $3.1 billion to tenants after a slow start. (More than 100,000 New Yorkers are still waiting to receive aid, however, the state comptroller reported this week.)
Before joining state government, Tietz served as CEO of homeless services providers and spent three years in a policy role at the city’s Department of Social Services.
