The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have assessed that a significant portion of Hamas’ tunnel network remains functional despite recent military operations aimed at dismantling the underground infrastructure. The report, released on July 2, 2024, highlights the ongoing challenge of neutralizing Hamas’ extensive network of tunnels used for smuggling, movement of fighters, and launching attacks against Israel.

The IDF’s assessment follows a series of targeted operations in Gaza, which included the demolition of several key tunnels. However, the report indicates that Hamas has managed to maintain and repair much of its tunnel network, continuing to pose a substantial threat to Israeli security.

“Our recent operations have successfully destroyed some of Hamas’ tunnel infrastructure, but a significant portion of the network remains operational. This underscores the complexity and scale of the challenge we face in neutralizing these threats,” an IDF spokesperson stated.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged the findings and reiterated Israel’s commitment to addressing the threat posed by Hamas’ tunnels. “The existence of these tunnels continues to threaten the security of our nation. We will persist in our efforts to locate and destroy this infrastructure to protect our citizens and ensure our national security,” Netanyahu said.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant emphasized the importance of continued vigilance and advanced tactics in dealing with the tunnel threat. “Hamas’ tunnel network is a critical component of their strategy against Israel. We must adapt and innovate our methods to effectively counter this threat and safeguard our borders,” Gallant stated.

The international community has expressed concern over the enduring threat posed by Hamas’ tunnels and the potential for further escalation of violence. The United States reiterated its support for Israel’s right to defend itself while urging for a comprehensive approach to addressing the underlying issues. “We stand with Israel in its right to defend itself against terrorist threats. It is crucial to address the root causes of the conflict to achieve lasting peace,” a US State Department spokesperson said.

The United Nations and the European Union have also called for continued efforts to achieve a sustainable resolution to the conflict. “The existence of these tunnels is a symptom of the broader conflict. We urge all parties to engage in meaningful dialogue to address the root causes and work towards a peaceful solution,” said a UN representative.

The IDF’s report highlights the resilience and adaptability of Hamas in maintaining its tunnel network, even under intense military pressure. As the situation evolves, Israel faces the ongoing challenge of disrupting and destroying this critical infrastructure while navigating the broader complexities of the conflict.
