A woman died after she was pulled from the water off Brooklyn’s Manhattan Beach, according to officials.

The FDNY said a call came in just after 6 p.m. Monday of a woman in the water off the popular beach. Video from the Citizen App showed more than a dozen first responders sprinting across the sand, carrying a woman in distress.

The woman was taken to Coney Island Hospital, where she died, police said. It was unclear how she drowned.

“I knew something happened because there was a bunch of paramedics you know fire fighters and they all carried her all at once,” said Ivan Cruz, who was at the beach at the time. “It’s sad. I don’t know if they had some sort of like medical condition or they had something going on.”

Other swimmers at Manhattan Beach said the water there is typically calm and shallow, though on Tuesday it was a bit rougher. There was a lifeguard on duty at the beach, but they end their shift at 6 p.m., just minutes before the calls came in.

The woman, believed to be in her 70s, has not yet been identified.

The incident occurred just an hour after firefighters in the Bronx had to make a water rescue near City Island. Just after 5 p.m., two FDNY rescue swimmers were sent into the water to help get people out. The FDNY did not state how many swimmers were rescued. No injuries were reported.
