- Nine tribal casinos in Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas, and Idaho were targeted by a coordinated wave of hoax bomb threats, prompting evacuations and temporary disruptions
- Police are seeking the public’s help to identify those responsible, while several casinos have increased security as the investigations continue
- Authorities determined the threats were not credible, but those responsible could face serious state and federal felony charges carrying years in prison
Law enforcement agencies across several states are seeking the public’s help in identifying the suspects behind a seemingly coordinated nationwide string of hoax bomb threats made against tribal casinos in four states.

On Sunday, June 28, nine tribal casinos in Michigan, Oklahoma, Texas, and Idaho received telephone calls warning of a bomb or similar mass casualty event.
The Island Resort & Casino on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino in Texas, and the Clearwater River Casino & Lodge in Idaho were among the threatened tribal casinos. Six casinos in Oklahoma also received calls, including the Downstream Casino Resort, Comanche Nation Casino, Red River Casino, Kiowa Casino, Chickasaw Casino, and Hard Rock Casino Tulsa.
The hoaxes occurred nearly simultaneously across the country, resulting in disrupted operations and evacuations.
Investigations Continue
The tribal and local police departments serving the nine casinos where bomb threats were made said their investigations determined that the threats were hoaxes and that there was no public danger.
Law enforcement agencies are asking the public for tips on who might be behind what is believed to be a coordinated hoax levied against the tribal casinos. The FBI has not yet said publicly whether it’s involved in the investigation, though the federal law enforcement agency typically intervenes when there is suspected interstate crime, threats against tribal lands, or threats of terrorism.
Several of the casinos targeted said they plan to have increased security at their properties in the days ahead. The Quapaw Nation Marshal Service says it’s stationing additional officers at the Downstream Casino Resort as a “precautionary measure.”
The Comanche Nation was also targeted in a bomb hoax in February, when its Comanche Nation Casino, Red River, and Kiowa casinos were evacuated due to bomb threats.
Bomb Threat Penalties
The repercussions for making a bomb threat vary by state, but it is uniformly a serious crime that carries significant penalties
A federal conviction for making a bomb threat carries a possible imprisonment of up to 10 years. If a bomb threat results in bodily injury or death, the imprisonment can be greatly extended, including up to life.
State-level convictions for bomb threats carry prison terms of three to 20 years, with Florida and Massachusetts having the longest sentencing guidelines.
Bomb threat charges are typically felonies, which become part of a person’s permanent criminal record.
