In a significant breach of security protocols, an Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldier, along with her partner, has been indicted for smuggling illegal Palestinian immigrants into Israel. The Petah Tikva Magistrate Court received the indictment against a 21-year-old man from Karnei Shomron and his 19-year-old partner, a soldier from Ramle, for their involvement in smuggling operations.

The soldier, who worked part-time as a waitress in Rishon Lezion, began her illicit activities by transporting a Palestinian coworker from his West Bank village to Israel. Over time, she expanded her operations, smuggling dozens of Palestinians into Israel for monetary compensation, sometimes while wearing her IDF uniform.

The smuggling operations, which took place amidst the heightened security measures of Operation Iron Swords, involved transporting individuals from the Beit Horon gas station through the Maccabim crossing into central Israel. The soldier’s partner played a critical role by hiding the illegal passengers during checkpoint inspections.

Investigations revealed that one of the smuggled individuals was a security prisoner released as part of the Schalit deal. This connection highlights the severe implications of the smuggling operations on national security.

The police prosecution unit emphasized the gravity of the soldier’s actions, especially during a time of war and increased security threats. They called for the detention of the accused until the trial concludes, citing the ongoing risk they pose to public safety and national security.

The case underscores the challenges Israel faces in maintaining internal security and the complexities of dealing with illegal immigration, particularly during times of conflict. The indictment serves as a stern reminder of the consequences of compromising national security for personal gain.
